A brave peasant woman manages to rise above all the tribulations of life through sheer grit and her honesty. So high is her sense of integrity that she kills her son, a criminal.

The film had Nargis written all over it. The actress emerged out of the Raj Kapoor shadow in this Mehboob Khan classic.

It was during the filming of this film that romance blossomed between actor Sunil Dutt and Nargis, after a fire broke out and the gallant Dutt came to her rescue.
