The first film was made under Vel pictures banner by PV.Das. Where
Laxmana Swamy and Shantakumari played the lead roles. Initially he
was the exhibitor and partner in Minerva talkies. Later he joined
S.D.Swamy, G.P.Saradhi, and Jayanthi Lal takur and built a studio. K.Ramanath,A.K.Shekar, Marugadas etc. joined him. Actually they each
worked as an assistant to V.Santaram.
Vel Pictures first film was Sita Kalyanam in 1934. Their Second picture
was Mayabazar Alias Shasirekha Parinayam. In that movie we see Santakumari
as young and beautiful Shasirekha. The way she acted was just copied by
Savitri in later version, but unable to outshine Santakumari.
Muragadasa says he loves silent movies only. As they all can be
watched irrespective of language and can be viewed by whole world.
The language keeps the barrier and every one cannot watch them.
In 1957 Vijaya made this film with K.V.Reddy,Pinagali,Gokehela and
Kaladhar but they are not par to P.V.Das,Shekar,Ramnath. Do you have
any idea who played Dharmaraju in Vijaya's Mayabazar? None. Because all
the script is around Shasirekha,Laxmanakumar,Abhimanyu and Ghatotkacha.
Screenplay is too good and that is the reason it was evergreen and all
time hit.
Heard that Saluri composed atleast four songs in Vijaya's Mayabazar.
All the remaining songs and back ground music composed by Ghantasala.
For example take the songs of Missama 'karuninchu meri mata' and
'balanura madana' resembles hindustani music. In 1950 they imported
'Hammond organ' which played important role in songs like 'lahiri
lahiri lo' ,'nevena nanu pilichindi' , 'choopulo kalicina subhavela'
looks like composed by Saluri. 'aha na pellanta', 'sundari o sundari'
songs resembles the song of Patalabhiravi's 'vineve bala na prema gola'
According to Saluri , first music will be composed on situation, then
Pingali used to write lyrics according to that, which was supervised
by Chakrapani and then it will be translated in tamil and will be
recorded in both languages at a time. After this huge hit, Vijay
banner made some more movies under K.V.Reddy like Satya Harischandra,
Jagadekaveeruni katha, Uma Chandi Gowri Shankarula katha but none stand
of Mayabazar. Looks like Vahini's tradition is followed by Vijaya as
they earlier made Potanna and Vemana under Vahini's banner. Chakrapani
says 'You should not use the glisarine in the sets'. This we can see in
Mayabazar. Trick shots are beautifully done which are like text books
for the TV serials now.
